Hi my name is David and I am a degree qualified Engineer and have also completed a Masters degree from University of Western Australia in 2013. I am currently in my penultimate year at Sydney University completing a double major in Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Tutoring is my passion, I am constantly refining my tutoring skills and approaches and have full confidence that I can drive all students to achieve their academic goals. I have taught university, secondary and primary students. As a side, I go from a variety of textbooks and past exam papers and will go an extra mile to get you better questions with worked out solutions if needed as well. My teaching style is warm and relaxed, without being overly casual. I believe in a positive learning environment, with a focus on staying "on topic". I am a patient, diligent and friendly tutor, and as such I am always able to fill the gaps in students' logical though processes.
Since 2014, high schools in NSW that I have regularly tutored Preliminary (Year 11) and HSC (High School Certificate)- 2 Unit and 3 Unit maths have come from: The Scots College, Newington College, Conservatorium High School, Tempe High School, Beverly Hills Girls High School, Malek Fahd School, Casimir Catholic College, St Spyridon College and Canterbury Girls High School. (All references available) As well as educating senior students, I have given lessons to middle years and intermediate years from Years 7-10 students in preparation for HSC and senior years, those students are studying at: Willoughby Girls High School, Sydney Grammar School, MLC School Burwood and Marist College Kogarah. On special request I can teach General Mathematics, which I have taught to students from: Knox Grammar School, St Andrews Cathedral, De La Salle College Ashfield, Trinity Grammar School and International Grammar School. Junior primary schools that I have tutored in preparation for upper high school: Artarmon Public School, Cranbrook School, St Patrick's Primary Parramatta and Macquarie Fields Public School. For upper high school I work form the main textbooks: Cambridge, New Century Maths, Oxford, SignPost, Connections and Pearson. If there is a resource that a student uses that I don't have, I make the effort to go out and buy the book to make sure I keep up to pace with the students school content.
My IB Diploma tutoring experience has been working for a couple of Presbyterian Ladies' College students from Great Britain (Peppermint Grove, WA) in 2013 and a student from Newington College in Maths SL (Standard Level) from 2016-2017. My group tutoring experience (have conducted 2 group sessions in total) of Maths SL have been to students from Kambala School. My SL students were able to score high bands for the respective IB maths subjects. ( I still have references available) As well as this, I previously taught a St Andrews Cathedral school student in Mathematical Studies. I have access to all solutions to Maths HL, Maths SL, Maths Options textbooks (and own physical copies of Haese Mathematics, Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press textbooks) in which I am happy to explain step-by-step answers. I can one-by-one break down specifically what a Band 3,4,5,6 and 7 type as well as break down the question and answer into simpler terms for my current IB students. It's important a student knows what kind of question they are answering and the specific level of difficulty associated to it. Using this resource has helped me to pass on shortcuts, tips, tricks and save time for my students in senior years especially with such busy Year 11 and 12 commitments. I am also familiar with alternative entrance exams such as the SAT: having obtained 780/800 in the Math section of the composite SAT Exam (99th National Representative Percentile), 750/800 in the Mathematics Level 1 (92nd percentile) and a score of 790/800 in the Mathematics Level 2.
I have also done statistics tutoring for undergraduates at NSW universities. My thesis - "Correlation between gold price movement relative to share price movements of Australian Stock Exchange companies" in my final year obtained a Distinction grade at university. I keep up-to-date with current stock price movements and follow financial markets on a worldwide scale. I have kept the majority of my statistics textbooks, notes, tutorials and online quizzes that I have gone through with past students. As well as this, I completed Statistics Advanced (MATH1905) and Statistical Models (STAT2011) at Sydney Uni and have experience using R Commander/R Studio software. I can perform the majority of hypothesis test and am happy to explain the methods in getting to a solution.
I am able to help primary and upper high school students in all areas of English including: reading, spelling, writing and listening. I can give feedback and homework in the areas of creative writing areas which cover the following tasks: recount, procedure, poetry, narrative, literary response, information reports, explanation, discussion, factual descriptions and expositions. I also have access to: Scholarship/Opportunity Class tests, NAPLAN, ICAS test materials which I have used to tutor past primary students and middle high school students with. I have also sat the IELTS exam a couple of times in the past, the first time as a test to gain entrance into university and the second time for work purposes and obtained bands of 8.5 and 9.0 for the speaking section respectively and believe that having a tutor who can communicate with a student is imperative for success. I have still kept my IELTS resources which may be of help to students in helping to better understand the structure of this exam.
